HP re-position their home server line for small business, but miss the opportunity to truly differentiate from the MediaSmart Server at launch with business-oriented add-ins.

Introduction

Store it!  Secure it!  Share it!  This is HP’s call to action for the HP StorageWorks X510 Data Vault.  Their target audience?  The Small Office/Home Office (or SOHO) decision makers.  I am sure that those same buzz words could very easily be associated with the HP MediaSmart Server line, on which this new model is based.  However, we are not talking about a consumer product today.

Windows Home Server was officially released for sale less than 2 years ago.  Since that time, WHS has had its share of growing pains, mostly notably in the form of the infamous File Corruption Bug.  We have seen the release of 2 Power Packs plus a third one currently in the works.  Some may disagree with me, but WHS is at a point where one can call it a mature and stable Operating System.  At least mature since it is, after all, based upon Windows SBS 2003.  Regardless of the age, SBS 2003 was a great server OS and a hard act to follow.

Whether the home server consumer market has been a success, or a disappointment, is anyone’s guess. Regardless, the powers-that-be at HP and Microsoft have spotted a small business opportunity for their products.  Hence, the birth of the HP StorageWorks X510 Data Vault which is squarely positioned at the small (micro) business owner.

Hello. I’m from the heartland of U.S. Lots of corn and beans, although Iowa is a lot more than just farmland. It also has a few computer enthusiasts (no, not me!). I’ve been around PC’s since I got my 1st PC XT aloooong time ago. WGS is one of the first sites I found centered around WHS. And the best. Every once in awhile, I do get away from the KB and enjoy time with and my wife and our 4 kids. And I do have a day job.

    Nice review.

I suspect the X510 is a sort of trial balloon to begin differentiating the utilities for SOHO apart from the 'home' server line, and I wonder if the engineers at HP will begin to add SOHO-specific utilities in their next release.

Does anyone have any view on the EX490 comparted to the X510? What's the major differences and such?

I live in Norway and the EX495 is not available here. Therefore these to are my choice. However Im uncertain is its really necessery to buy the X510 instead of the EX490.

Same for me in Germany. Neither the ex490 nor the ex495 is available in Germany and I doubt HP will change this. Although I`m really close to that company ;) I have to choose the X510 if I want to go for a HP WHS. The price is, compared to some online stores, affordable and ok from my side (1TB version around 470€).

As I will replace the internal System disk with a 2GB version anyway, in order to get the 8GB max. storage capacity I do not care about the loss 500GB.
