HP StorageWorks X510 Data Vault Unboxed

Last week, Terry had the pleasure of announcing the availability of HP’s small business servers, the StorageWorks X510 Data Vault series.  Today, I get the even greater pleasure of unboxing one of these little beauties.

So, without further ado, here goes the unboxing!

As befits a business machine, the X510 comes in a no-frills box.

Other than that, the remaining pictures look a lot like the MSS EX490/495 series.

As you can see, the x510 chassis has a lot of shine to it!

And what appears to be the same MediaSmart 3.0 software that comes with the MSS EX490/495 series.

It sure looks a lot like a MSS EX490/495.  I’ll be spending a few days getting this puppy up and running.  Hopefully, I will be able to do some comparisons with my trusty-ole AMD self-built unit.

And speaking of which, hello sexy little thing, say Hi to big ole monster machine!  And as additional contrast, sitting by the X510 is that Sans Digital TR4M-B DAS.

Hello. I’m from the heartland of the U.S. Lots of corn and beans, although Iowa is a lot more than just farmland. It also has a few computer enthusiasts (no, not me!). I’ve been around PCs since I got my 1st PC XT aloooong time ago. WGS is one of the first sites I found centered around WHS. And the best. Every once in awhile, I do get away from the KB and enjoy time with and my wife and our 4 kids. And I do have a day job.

I can't wait till the full review (Compare) to see if it's really Business Different? or just a sticker.

It has more storage, but is basically the EX495 with a different sticker. That's not to say that HP won't diverge the product lines going forward with business-specific add-ins, for example.

Hmm doesn't seem to set itself apart enough at this point. Why would anybody buy it without at least notice of business related specifics? It’s much cheaper to buy a “Home” 49x and buy another drive.

Does the HP iPhone app work with the x510?

    • http://intensedebate.com/people/tezzer Terry Walsh

It's running the MediaSmart Server 3.0 software, so should be fine with the iStream app.

Given that HP wonb't release the x496 in the UK, this is the only dual core HP option available.

Also, what are the main UI differences on the EX495 and X510. Users mention some slight differences, but they are not specific in what they are.
