The QNAP NMP-1000 is billed as a cross-over digital media player and network attached storage device. Much like the Xstreamer we reviewed a couple of weeks ago, its major reason for being is to playback music, video and photos from a PC or other attached storage device, but, as its shipped with room for a 3.5” SATA hard disk, you can throw in another 2Tb of storage and use the NMP-1000 as additional storage next to your TV.
You’ll find support for a wide range of formats:
Audio: FLAC, WAV, WMA, AAC, PCM, AC3, MPA, DTS, OGG
Video: AVI, MPEG/MPG, VCD (ISO, MPG), DVD (VOB, IFO, ISO), WMV, ASF, TP, TS, TRP, M1V, M2V, M4V, M2P, M2T, M2TS, MTS, MOV, MP4, RMP4, MKV, MPEG1, MPEG2, MPEG4, XVID, H.264, H.263, WMV9, VC1
Photo: BMP, JPEG/ JPG, PNG
Playlist: M3U, PLS, WPL, ASX
Subtitle: SRT, SUB, SMI, TXT, ASS, SSA, SUB (with idx)
Online content is available courtesy of YouTube videos, Flickr photos & Apple movie trailers and the device also acts as an FTP server and Bittorrent client without the need to connect to a PC.
Connectivity is strong, with HDMI 1.3 allowing 1080p output to your TV, along with component video, optical and coaxial audio. You’ll also find Gigabit internet, 3 x USB 2.0 ports, optional 802.11n wireless support, eSATA for connecting to a PC. If you’re more of a standard definition guy, you’ll love the composite and S-Video connectors.
Pricing and availability still to be confirmed, but you can check out more over at QNAP’s website.

Sounds like a great way to have a STB with your fav TV shows (via the included bittorrent client, assuming it can subscribe to RSS feeds). Price will be the big deciding factor as to whether this will be a killer device or not (some random UK company is listing this for ~$500 US: http://www.span.com/product_info.php?products_id=...
