The Windows Media Center start menu has long been a source of frustration for WMC enthusiasts. Microsoft has generally been reluctant to allow end-users to make changes or additions to the WMC interface. When the need to add a new program or category to the start menu became too strong to ignore, I would invariably turn to a little program called MC Menu Mender written by Advent from the Australian Media Center Community forums.
When Microsoft let slip that Windows 7 Media Center would have fewer restrictions placed on the start menu, I was certain that Advent would be there to take full advantage. Sure enough, the good guys over at the Missing Remote have put out the word that Advent has posted the beta version of his MC Menu Mender follow-up, Media Center Studio. Not only will Media Center Studio help users add new strips to the start menu, but it will also help edit most of the native strips in ways that were once WMC taboo. There is also support for building and applying themes that can drastically change the look of Windows 7 Media Center. Even in beta form, Media Center Studio looks likely to be an essential tool for the WMC tweakers out there.
