Xtreamer Media Player and Server – Unboxed

Earlier in the week, we highlighted the launch of the Xtreamer Media Player and Server which arrived in the UK this week at price of £99 and is available from http://www.thextreamer.com/

The Xtreamer is a high definition media player which can stream a raft of digital file formats from your PC, home server or NAS device to your TV. An optional internal hard drive also allows the Xtreamer to sit on your home network and provide additional networked storage for your media.

We received one of the first units to hit the UK last week, and will have a full hands-on review for you shortly. In the meantime, enjoy these unboxing shots.

Will this be available in the US?

      James,

In the USA, try http://www.mvixusa.com or http://www.popcornhour.com or http://www.mediagateusa.com . All of these units are available here and have a range of options, HD connections, hard drives and or Internet content support. All while supporting just about any video/audio/photo format you can throw at 'em.

It is available in the US, although it ships from the UK, so shipping is kind of steep (about $30 to California). Their site will even show you the prices in USD instead of Euros with a click of the mouse. If indeed the AC adapter and remote are included in the base price and not accessories like the website suggests, then it still has the best bang for the buck as far as I can see. Most of the units from the other companies suggested in this thread with similar features are around 1.5 to 3 times the price of the Xtreamer (except for the M2TV it seems). However, if the remote and AC adapter are truly "sold separately", then the Xtreamer loses much of it's appeal for US customers as it puts it on par pricewise with those other units.

If you want to purchase it in the US you need to purchase it from the online shop of xtreamer.net, NOT http://www.thextreamer.com. The online shop of http://www.thextreamer.com is for the UK only and is the site of the UK partner of Xtreamer. That also is why I have been confused as to the inclusion of the AC adapter and remote. The UK only site makes it clear that they are included, the international site not so much. I have an email into xtreamer.net hoping to clarify this issue, and will post back with their answer so we US-based potential buyers will know if this is truly a competitively priced alternative.

    Terry,

I let some of my UK buddies know about this Xtreamer box a few weeks ago. They are pretty pumped about it. No need to hack a first gen Xbox…LOL. Very similar to the Mvix-USA unit. Can't wait to read your review.

Have been working on it over the weekend – it's a great product for the price. A few foibles here and there, but no show stoppers. Hopefull will be able to publish the review later today.
