CEDIA 2009: VidaBox FireServer

Over at the CEDIA show this week, VidaBox have announced the WHS-based FireServer, a 1U rack mounted server packing a Blu-ray drive and delivering on board “Drop-n-rip” archiving from blu-ray, CD and DVD as well as multiroom DVD streaming.

VidaBox’s “Drop-n-rip” service archives your discs, whilst finding online cover art, plot synopsis and actor/actress information for movies as well as track information for music. It’s powered by My Movies for Windows Home Server.

Storage starts at 1.25Tb and increases up to 8Tb depending on the configuration purchased. Processing power is relatively limited, utilising an 1.6GHz Intel Atom Dual Core, and the home server packs 1Gb of RAM.

    If you are going to make this level of investment in ripping blu-rays then you need to think about the space requirements. At up to a possible 50Gb per movie a 8Tb server will hold depressingly few ripped Blu-Ray disks. Trust me I know. If you plan to rip blu-rays you need to start with a server that you can easily upgrade to 32Gb or more.

    paul is right, 8tb may sound like alot on paper but when it comes down to investing any amount of money, this server just isn't worth it
