Alex Kuretz, head man over at MediaSmartServer.net, has released a new add-in for Windows Home Server titled WHS Port Forward.

According to Alex:

The Add-In is called “WHS Port Forward”, and it allows the user to utilize the UPnP feature of Windows Home Server to open forwarded ports from your router to your Home Server. This is useful if you have installed a 3rd party application that requires incoming access from the internet. This Add-In removes the need to assign a static IP address to your server or manually forward ports on your router. Simply configure the port you would like forwarded, and let Windows Home Server handle it for you.

Alex has the full details and download link over at MediaSmartServer.net.  Try it out and see how it works.

And lest I forget, congratulations to Alex on the birth of his son.

Hello. I’m from the heartland of U.S. Lots of corn and beans, although Iowa is a lot more than just farmland. It also has a few computer enthusiasts (no, not me!). I’ve been around PC’s since I got my 1st PC XT aloooong time ago. WGS is one of the first sites I found centered around WHS. And the best. Every once in awhile, I do get away from the KB and enjoy time with and my wife and our 4 kids. And I do have a day job.

Just being able to view your setting from within the WHS GUI is an asset

Good idea! I think this add-in will be used by a lot of users who don't know how to forward ports in thier router.

    …and congrats Alex!

I installed it awhile ago. What is nice is that you do not have to have PnP router to obtain the port info.

I plan on trying out some of the other features later. Review time! ;)
