Microsoft and Yahoo! Finally Partner-Up

This may be a little bit off the Windows Home Server path, but this bit of news perked my interest when I saw it.  After all, Microsoft has been a persistent suitor of Yahoo! for quite some time.  And spurned by Yahoo! each time Microsoft has made advances.

As good as any soap opera!

Well, Microsoft may not have merged the companies but they got the next best thing: a strategic partnership.

I guess persistence finally paid off.

From the PressPass announcement:

Microsoft, Yahoo! Change Search Landscape

Global Deal Creates Better Choice for Consumers and Advertisers

SUNNYVALE, Calif. and REDMOND, Wash. — 29 July, 2009 — Yahoo! and Microsoft announced an agreement that will improve the Web search experience for users and advertisers, and deliver sustained innovation to the industry. In simple terms, Microsoft will now power Yahoo! search while Yahoo! will become the exclusive worldwide relationship sales force for both companies’ premium search advertisers.

You can read the whole thing here, if you so desire.  Regardless of how either company feels toward each other, I think both companies realize that together they might have a chance to compete with Google, and no chance if they did not team up.

“Together we stand, divided we fall”

About Jim Clark

Hello. I’m from the heartland of the U.S. Lots of corn and beans, although Iowa is a lot more than just farmland. It also has a few computer enthusiasts (no, not me!). I’ve been around PCs since I got my 1st PC XT aloooong time ago. WGS is one of the first sites I found centered around WHS. And the best. Every once in awhile, I do get away from the KB and enjoy time with and my wife and our 4 kids. And I do have a day job.

Not bad, bing is pretty neat. I still think Google will maintain it's number 1 spot. The best I can see from this is Microsoft & Yahoo gaining a little bit more of the marketshare, but that may be good enough for them.

    • JohnCz

I think Microsoft & Yahoo would be very happy to grow Bing's marketshare from the now combine 28% to lets say 35% over the next 3 years. It may seems like a small gain, but that is billions of dollars.

There is a lot to be said for brand name association. Do you ask for a facial tissue or a Kleenex?

The same can be said of Google. Do you do a "web search" or a Google?

  • John Shelton

You should remove the quotation marks from the statement at the end of your article. I believe the statement you are intending to quote is, "United we stand, Divided we fall"____

I am not a Microsoft fanboy, but I would CERTAINLY "Bing" a question before I would consider "Google" a question. I don't trust Microsoft with my personal information nor my browsing history, but I ABSOLUTELY will not give that information to Giggle.

Well, I kind-a did that on purpose. To me united goes with merge (as in merged companies). "Together" implied the "strategic partnership".

Perhaps I should have put the quotes around the "Together" only?

Is this site an unbranded Microsoft production? It seems like it.

      Nope. No MS involvement here….

      Nope. No MS involvement here…. I guess Jim's a fanboy ;-)

I guess making a statement like: "As good as any soap opera!" make me a fanboi! :p

Cheez, I thought it was quite interesting that the 2 companies finally agreed on something, based upon negotiations that had occurred previously…

And in the end, I will put it this way. I ain't cool enough (or from CA) to where Apple would even take my money… And I ain't rich enough to be able to afford their stuff… And on and on…. There, you can now "offically" call me a fanboi! ;)

I’ve read the other customers’ reviews about Skydex Soft Ltd, and I
    agree with every word. Actually, they have very talented employees;
terms of delivery of projects are not delayed: the prices are much
more lower than the other companies have; and they have a big variety
of services. What else could you fish for? I think that everyone who
works with with company at least once, would be using it all the
times, and be completely satisfied and happy with the results. You can
find out more about them if you check their website
    http://www.skydexsoft.com.
