Great news – it’s likely the shipping dates MAY improve !! We are pressing to get stock out later next week – for those who have already ordered, for the lucky ones !

TPC can confirm the MB has now completed ALL tests with WHS – and works well. So for self builders, it’s a great platform (total power consumption = 12W + HDDs) !!

Keep your eyes peeled for the next WHS Server appliance from TPC – small, silent and low low price…. coming soon.

Especially nice if you pair it with this small case which holds two 2.5 hard drives:

and this addon which allows a full height PCI card:

This boards is looking good! Power consumption is significant lower than the current Atom boards, and it includes a very efficient supply.

Any suggestions for extensions with a few SATA ports on the mini-PCIx?

I’ve also read in different forum topics, that a dual core should be used to be prepared for Vail. Any thoughts on this?

I actually had read about this board. Right now, someone has built a PC around it. With a 250GB 2.5” SATA drive, boot power draw is around 17W with no extra COM/LPT ports enabled, droping to 12~14W in Windows XP (maybe 7 could help drop it a little bit more?).

Sadly, the N and Z series Atom CPUs don’t support x64 instructions, so Vail is a no go for this board.

I second GuustFlater’s request for mini-PCIe -> SATA adapters, though I don’t think there are any. I think there was someone who found a mini-PCIe to PCIe 1x adapter, though, which would probably help.

There is, however, an interesting 4-port, PM-aware PCI controller, though, which would be great for a NAS with up to 22 drives (including the two motherboard connectors). It’s not as if WHS *needs* that much bandwidth to begin with…

    From the store blog

“Please note this main board INCLUDES the DC/DC power supply – no need to an ATX DC/DC convertor of ATX power looms etc”

So it comes with a little power brick or do they mean it comes with a DC power port?

    • __Miguel_

From my knowledge, saying "includes the DC/DC power supply" only means something like a PicoPSU is not needed.

Or, in other words, you only need the power brick, which is responsible for the AC/DC (lol) converter.

Now the question on my mind, and since even the PicoPSU has limited DC/DC convertion capabilities (150W max, on the newest model), is just how much amperage can this board handle without melting. It would be very nice to have a 10+ drive NAS, but if the on-board DC/DC converter can only handle two drives (well, three, there is a 44-pin IDE connector, after all), plus the max motherboard TDP (my guess is, around 60W, if that much), then this board will only be good for VERY low-density NASes…

      Cheers.

      Miguel

Surprising Needs for an AC/DC Adapter
You don’t need to be an electrician to understand polarity in electricity.
Like magnets, electricity needs a negative and a positive connection; electricity can only exist when there are two points between which is can flow or circulate.
