ESET NOD32 Antivirus 4 Works With With Windows Home Server

It does not appear to be widely advertised by ESET, but according to Aryeh Goretsky NOD32 Antivirus 4 is compatible with Windows Home Server per his comment in this thread on the ESET forums.

The associated KB article on how to remote install NOD32 can be found here.

Aryeh sent me an email regarding compatibility recently.  Per his email:

ESET NOD32 Antivirus is recommended for installation on Windows Home Server because the firewall module in ESET Smart Security will disable the RDP connection to the server when prompting to set the protection mode on it the first time the firewall initializes.  We do have an article on installing ESET NOD32 Antivirus in our knowledgebase at:

How do I remotely install ESET NOD32 Antivirus (4.0) on Windows Home Server?http://kb.eset.com/esetkb/index?page=content&id=SOLN2212

I have now installed NOD32 on my WHS and it seems to be working fine.  Which means that I am now working on a review.  So stay tuned.

I’ve been around PCs since I got my 1st PC XT aloooong time ago. WGS is one of the first sites I found centered around WHS. And the best. Every once in awhile, I do get away from the KB and enjoy time with and my wife and our 4 kids. And I do have a day job.

ESET produce a fabulous AV and their SmartSecurity isn't bad either (I wouldn't install it on the Server but if this is done place it in learning mode)

My only issue is that to install it on WHS you have to buy 5 licences minimum and there is no discount for home use. So I'd use AV on the server plus ESS on the clients and have a price tag starting at £113 per year (Licences for ESS can be used on AV)

I run 7 PC on my WHS as family members have PCs and Laptops/Netbooks. This would run me to £209.48 per year for a home network not making any money. Avast! do a very good WHS system including add-in for a third of this price if intended for use in the home. I have no problem using Nod32 on WHS boxes I've fitted for clients running businesses.

Lets see an add-in and price discount for WHS users. (The ESET network panel is very good for techs like me but the ability to control current licenses, updates and push installs from the WHS console would be great for most users.

I have my Eset v4 installed on my Home Server (AV not ESS cos the firewall will just block everything) but my Home Server has frozen a couple of times since doing this, so I might be uninstalling it. Be warned, if your Home Server starts freezing up then that's why.

Is there a general discussion somewhere on the value of AV on WHS at all. After all, you're not really using it as a general desktop are you. So as long as you have appropriate protection on the clients, why does the server need it?

    Hi there,

I tried to use NOD32 v4.0 on my Home Server and it works just like a charm. However, there’s a drawback: The current version does not integrate into the Home Server Console.

I found out the problem, I use utorrent (latest version 1.8.3 beta) on my WHS and when it completed downloads with the latest version of NOD32 installed (4.0.424) it was locking the whole computer up, no network access thru ultravnc, no access to the files from the network, no response when on the machine itself.

The only solution was a cold reset (i.e. pressing the power button and then turning the computer back on).

I reported this in the dialog while uninstalling.

If someone else could try to replicate this it would be great and hopefully solvable. Don't worry, I didn't lose any files, just patience ;)

Hmmm. I've been having lock-ups recently as well, but didn't think it was related to NOD32. I looked through the logs, but couldn't see anything glaring. I guess I will try to uninstall it and see what happens.

I have re-installed NOD32, the server locked up without it installed so it looks like NOD32 ain't the culprit. I suspected Intel Speedstep as it was enabled in the BIOS so I've disabled it, see if that fixes the problem.

I have been using ESET NOD latest version without any freezes. My WHS is working just fine. I wonder if the CPU usage is less than the stock Mcaffee that was installed on the hpmediasmart server?
