Add-in: PS3 Media Server for WHS

PS3 Media Server is a DLNA compliant uPnP Media Server for the PlayStation 3, written in Java, with the purpose of streaming or transcoding any kind of media files, with minimum configuration. It’s backed up by the powerful Mplayer/ FFmpeg packages.

The PS3 Media Server For WHS Add-in allows you to access your PS3 Media Server through the Window Home Server Console. This will allow you configure the media streaming settings and restart the service if you have any issues without logging on via remote desktop.

    I have installed addition, works!
It is a pity that the window of management of options opens separately, instead of in Windows Home Server Console.
More resembles a label in the console :D

  • nef

For some reason i can't get this add-in to work. When i click on the tab within the homeserver console all i get is a green screen and then the console closes.

I've reinstalled the add-in a couple of times, doen the same with .NET framework 3.5, all to no avail.

  • Bigmango

    Awesome.

This is the best media server. It plays everything, DVD iso files (yes you can now store your DVDs as iso files on your WHS), videos in RAR/ZIP files, remuxes mkv files on the fly so there is no need to transcode them if the AVC is compliant, etc…

It has full support for multi-audio languages and multi-subtitles (you can select them on the fly in the PS3 #transcode# menu).

It also shows video thumbnails on the PS3 (as well as for audio, photo, etc…).

And of course it also plays internet streams.

This is much better than tversity, twonky media, windows media, etc…. I have tried them all. The latest version is rock stable.

I favor your view on this issue

  • RichNY

    Can this play netflix nstant?

  • Whitesox

Does the MediaSmart EX470 have enough horsepower for the transcoding? Anyone try this with an Xbox360?

  • nabeday

I am running the MediaSmart EX470 but with the memory upgraded to 2Gb and the streaming works great with a Wireless PS3 connection. The streaming of ISOs only works with the PS3 but it should be able to stream other formats to the Xbox 360.

  • Brian

Will this allow .vob files to finally be played on the PS3?

  • Tony

I have a custom home server (Not HP). Is this why i dont see the add in after i install?

  • Tony

Looks like it is up to date. After installing the .exe file shouldnt i see the .msi in "add ins"? Because I dont.

  • Tony

I am a dope. Thats what i needed to do. Thanks nabeday.

  • nabeday

    Can you please post your configuration? What versions are you using for the following apps;

PS3 Media Server, Java, WHS, .NET Framework

  • Batmantch

Ps3 server is working great as a running service. Here it comes! but the add-in .msi does screw up the console. i needed to reboot many times before i got it back to normal. I noticed someone else stated that their console broke after this add-inn. Well I found a work around and it works greater than the add-inn. Advance admin console / start menu /ps3 server. way better than the addin and it doesnt scew up anything. Also i noted that many of my troubles began after the java update so dont do it. If you have just uninstall ps3server and java completely and reboot. reinstall ps3 server and it will install javaq 6.0 and many of your headaches will be gone. I hope i helped someone good luck !

  • nabeday

I have just released Version 1.0.2 which should prevent the console from crashing on the WHS.

    • rych

This add-in seems to fail quite often taking down the WHS console with it (I'm running PP3 and PS3MS 1.10.5) – plenty of .NET2.0 runtime errors in the WHS application event log and this kind of error message in HomeServerConsole.XXX.log:
System.InvalidOperationException: Process has exited, so the requested information is not available.
      at System.Diagnostics.Process.EnsureState(State state) in System.dll
      at System.Diagnostics.Process.get_MainWindowHandle() in System.dll
      at Microsoft.HomeServer.HomeServerConsoleTab.PS3MS_Add_In.MainTabUserControl.ProcessExited(Object sender, EventArgs e) in HomeServerConsoleTab.PS3MS_Add_In.dll
      at System.Diagnostics.Process.OnExited() in System.dll

Great Add-In works great for my PS3.

I know this has nothing do do with this subject and I know I am asking a lot. Could you apply your expertise on a updated Ad -in for Utorrent. The one that is currently out there from Marcel Nouwens (uTorrent Add-In v1.1) has not been updated for 3 years and its not compatible with uttorrent 2.0 or higher. I believe a lot of WHS users would be great full. This has been discussed in a lot of different forums.

      Thank You

  • calmasacow

Can you define the thumbnails that get showed on the PS3. like for instance all of my movies have a folder.jpg file in their directories.

  • chris

how i install the PS3 media server to WHS? i need help to do this ? i just downloaded the software PS3 to my computer but i dont know how to setup to my WHS somebody can help with the steps to do this please i beg ! and the PS3 it doenst came with the file MSI from where i can get it ? i need for setup to my WHS as well ! please

  • Jay

Really hosed up the console. Unstalled the add-in and the software to no avail. Continue to get homeserverconsoletab.hp.dll errors as well as some problems with the database integrity. HP supports said a full restore was is, but I'm not ready for the nuclear option yet.

  • Mark

How do you get it to continue if you log out of Remote Desktop or the Console. Mine seems to shut down the service when I close the console or am not logged in.

  • Bryan

Sorry about the newbie question but have googled everywhere. I have just bout a new Acer Media Server and this is my first time using WHS. I can install the add in ok but can't for the life of me work out how I install a program to WHS via Remote Desktop? Please help.

    • Martin

Been in the same spot and mixed up Remote Console with Remote Desktop. On your "normal" Windows client you go to Start – All Programs – Accessoiries – Connect to Remote Desktop and you login to your WHS server. That's it.

      • Rich L

I know this is old, but thanks Bryan for asking the newbie question and thanks to Martin for answering it. It seems to work pretty well, but I just DL'd my digital copy of Unstoppable and tried to play it and it came up as an unsupported format. I DL'd the WMV format.

  • Terry

Can this software work via the WHS website?, I'm trying to find a way of using this software to stream remotely to Android, is this a pipe dream or has anyone managed to get it working?, if so… how?

    thanks

  • Frank

Bryan, sounds like you're having my problem. When this desktop, with HWS connection with PMS add-in running, goes to hibernate, it kills the network connection. Essentially, PMS is running through this computer. So I think I can just run PMS on my server, without the add-in, and it should work. Testing now.

  • Andy

anyone get this working on WHS 2011? If so could your let me know, so far I’m hitting a brick wall,

  • nabeday

Can you please post any support questions in the support section for the application?

    http://forum.wegotserved.com/index.php?showtopic=…

A couple of things to try before posting is to check that the PS3 Media Server runs ok on your home server and if you could also post the version of PS3 Media Server that you are using.

One other thing to try is to reset the console by selecting options when logging in to the console.

  • Kiros

I have the exact same problem.

  • nabeday

Yes, it will allow VOB files to be streamed to the PS3

  • nabeday

No, it should work on any Windows Home Server. Please check that your WHS is patched with the latest updates.

  • nabeday

    Did you install the add-in via the Home Server Console? If not then you will have to place the add-in MSI in the add-ins folder in the softwareadd-ins directory on the home server and install via the console. What .exe are you referring too? There is 2 things to install the PS3 Media Server application and then the PS3 Media Server for WHS add-in. It looks like you have only installed the application. The add-in is available from the following url;

    http://forum.wegotserved.com/index.php?autocom=do…

  • Whitesox

Cool… I've already got 2GB of RAM, I'll have to give this add-in a look.

  • Edward

Looks like the link is no longer working.
Anyway, had been trying for 2 hours to find the msi file to no avail.

    Thanks for any help.

  • Edward

Never mind, looks like it was a server glitch. After trying for 2+ hours and many many clicks, it finally worked.

The software itself works great. Thanks so much!
