is it possible to manage files not in shares?

@blackprint – I chose to only show files that are in shares as to make the add-in a safe as possible. But in a future version perhaps I can add an “expert” option that shows all files in all physical drives too. But I figured that the potential for messing up your server badly was so great that I decided against it in the first releases.

I’m going to try the add-in and I think the option to show all physical drives is ideal. The issue that I’m having trouble with is moving/copying file from either physical drives or the WHS backup of those drives to the shared area. Seems like the system disconnects or won’t accept file names of existing files and the transfer just drops. Will the WHS File Manager help in that regard?

The WHS File Manager uses the underlying OS features for copying and moving files. So if you have problems copying files using Windows I’ll doubt that using the File Manager will help.

As for physical drive support you must understand that the WHS management console is really running on your home server and only the user interface (UI) is sent to your computer. That means that any physical drives available in the WHS File Manager will be those connected directly to the server (via USB or eSATA) and not your local computer. WHS Backup drives are mounted on your local computer and will therefor not be visible to the WHS File Manager.

Is your computer connected wireless to your network when you have these problems? I have seen that some wireless routers crumble when the load gets too high. If you have the option I suggest you try again when connected through an Ethernet wire.

The WHS FileManager Add-In is now updated to v1.0.0.5:

    - Does no longer show printers as shares
    - Made current location of each pane to stand out more (easier to see)
    - Made each folder in pane path (above panes) clickable for easy access to
    any parent folder
    - Fixed problem with caching of exe file icons (all exe files got same icon)
    - Added support for sorting by clicking list headers
    - Canceling a rename operation (clicking escape) does no longer give an error
    - Changed default drag operation from move in 1.0.0.3 to copy.
    - Removed a lot of the error messages and instead disable the command buttons when you have not selected and files.
