Windows doesn’t allow you to defrag a drive unless it’s below the 75% full mark, so a add-in like this comes in very handy – thanks for the share!

WHS newbie here. I have 4 X 2 TB drives. My system drive (Disk 0) is 1% used. My other three drives are between 52 and 53% used. I don't like my system drive being mostly wasted. Is this normal? Will Drive Balancer fix this? Is that what the d: drive option is?

Great little DOS program!

I used this utility today on a MediaSmart EX475 (4 x500GB drives) because I had removed some of the storage disks due to a heat issue (but that's another story). When I resolved the heat issue, I reinstalled the drives and could'nt get them balanced again, with DISK0 having much more data than I preferred.

I read the instruction, ran the command com and "Presto" ….. all four drives equal again!

Hi Jim,

Run the DB 1.06 on all my drive…everything ok….but since a couple of day my C: drive start to have issue and i like to move the sharing part on the C: to the other drive. How should i do it.

Hey Jim
Does the drive balancer only support 4 drives? I have 6 drives in my WHS and i'm using DB1.06 but when i'm running it only drive 0 tru 3 is listed when I try to do equal % of each disk used ? mybe you can help me with this.

@john reed - I'm not entirely sure what you mean. If you need to upgrade a drive, go thru the normal WHS removal process which moves the data to another drive.

@Jim: While job completion varies likely significantly, I was just wondering about how long it would take until I can see that the thing is actually doing what it is supposed to. In the meantime, I found other post in the forum where my exact problem is discussed there. I will carry forward the discussion there. Something is certainly buggy here though.

@revengineer – PP2: yes. The screen shots are from a PP2 install. Regarding times, I purposely did not document times, simply becaused the time it takes to balance is dependent on so many factors.

If you feel that you are having a problem, post some screen shots in a forum post. I’m sure the author could help you out from there.

How long does it take for this tool to show any change. Has been running half our on my machine, but drives still show distribution of 43, 8, and 72% with absolutely no change. Has this been tested with PP2???

I was wondering the same thing about the error/bug. Beefcake is doing a good job here, but maybe we need some comfirmation for when the program is actually done.

But in the end this little program works great!
