Update: How to Run WSUS on Windows Home Server

WSUS (Windows Server Update Services)  is a local copy of Windows Update/Microsoft Update that allows you to control what gets “approved” for installation on the PCs that report to it.  Why would you want to do this at home you may ask?  Well, if you want to know that your PCs are being kept up to date on all Microsoft patches, or even block certain patches until you want them (IE7 for example), then this can all be achieved with WSUS.

Last year, Windows Small Business Server MVP, Kevin Royalty, wrote up a full walkthrough to install and configure WSUS for Windows Home Server.

Kevin has recently updated this guide, which is now available over on the WGS Wiki. Check it out!

i'd like to try this with vail but the instructions need to be updated for vail's ws s 2008r2 codebase

Not 100% sure as I have not test Vail but you can add WSUS as a role in full 08r2. I'm not sure but if it's anything like whs v1 it's pretty much the full version, just your choice of whether or not you care to violate your license agreement. I'd say that since WSUS is free, for now, then you may not even be violating the home server license agreement.
