    Underpowered. With RAM so low and we know WHS2/Vail is 64 bit only, why get cornered into a solution that requires a viaserverhacks.com website to spring up? I see the dual core Atom, Core2 (low power), or AMD XXXXe equivalent to be best given what people (here) really want.

    I do like the >4 bays. But no one in this economy will buy 8×320 hard drives for that cash. The WD 1TB Green is the sweet spot with the WD20EADS the up and comer at 2TB of Green space per slot.

    Where is the market?

  • Evaders99

    Man, totally not worth it with 320 GB drivers. Only 2.5 TB? With 1 TB being so cheap now, I would rather by it with no drives and stock with 1 TB myself.

    How is it a barebones server if it has drives in it?

  • http://geocline.net/ smadge1

    if you clicked the link you’d see all the options listed, you can use 8x 1TB drives. You can also order it with CF cards up to 16GB, or no drives at all.

    Could use a poll but HP probably has it right – offering _some_ drives and letting people find the rest. The way VIA is marketing this is like use for Corporate / Windows Server 200x where you know what you want at first. Most home users want a lower entry point and grow with needs. This unit has no growth that does not have a cost in lost drives. (320 swap for 1TB wastes the 320).

    The CF option is cool for some OSes like Linix, but WHS insists on a 80GB minimum OS drive (right?) so putting the OS on CF for WHS is not an option at 16GB.

    I think this is targeted at either the home server enthusiast (the type who builds a new PC every two years, we know who we are…) that wants to boast the most storage. It doesn’t have to boot from the CF card after all.

    The second use I can see for this is as a large NAS with backup. If you take a look at FreeNAS, you can build a very capable network storage system with very little processor requiremetns and have it run from a flash device. The drive bays leave you space for growth. I can see getting one with no drives and putting a 2GB CF card in and getting a good WHS backup solution in place. =

    This doesn’t really cut the mustard, and looks a bit pricey compared to (say) the Tranquil offering, which offers fewer drives, but is a nicer design.

    The 32-bit CPU is a definite no-no for me, as I intend to “upgrade” when V2 of WHS appears

    @smadge1 -

    FYI, I’ve been in touch with a Howard Ling from VIA-ITX about purchasing a NSD-7800 with no drives included. His first response was that no, it wasn’t possible outside of an approved OEM project.

    Later, he contacted me on his own to reverse himself – after speaking with VIA USA, it seems that this is a configuration that they will sell.

    We’ll get a barebones configuration price tomorrow. Contact oem@via-itx.com for info.

    I have no affiliation with any companies mentioned – I’m just interested in this product.

    Update: Price w/no drives is US $549.95.
