Microsoft to cut 5,000 Jobs

The world wide economic crisis continues to take it toll on companies and the resultant loss in jobs.  Microsoft announced Thursday its first broad layoffs in the history of the company.  A total of 5,000 jobs will be eliminated from the company during the next 18 months.

According to International Herald Tribune, Microsoft is not the only technology company facing hard times.  Sony is facing job cuts in light of a record annual operating loss.  And Nokia is another large technology company to announce job cuts.

With the continued decline in the stock markets all over the world, it make one wonder how long this recession will last and how many jobs will be lost, perhaps forever.

About Jim Clark

Hello. I’m from the heartland of the U.S. Lots of corn and beans, although Iowa is a lot more than just farmland. It also has a few computer enthusiasts (no, not me!). I’ve been around PCs since I got my 1st PC XT aloooong time ago. WGS is one of the first sites I found centered around WHS. And the best. Every once in awhile, I do get away from the KB and enjoy time with and my wife and our 4 kids. And I do have a day job.

Yeah, it is sad news. Lets hope none of the Windows 7 team or the Home Server team get affected by this! Though I do believe 1400 were being laid off right away.

Also, I’ve heard that a number of Intel manufacturing plants are being shut down worldwide too. Looks like the bad economy is *finally* hitting the IT industry.

I totally agree! I think something else designboom needs to "call out" is other blogs simply posting press releases, instead of actually writing content.
