Coming Soon: Full Hands On Review of the Via Artigo A2000

On my return to the UK from CES, I was surprised to see a new VIA Artigo A2000 barebones kit waiting for me at home (nice work, VIA).

Will be spending time this week building the system and seeing how well it works with Windows Home Server. Look out for a Hands-On review early next week.

Cool! I think this one has potential for the green users among us.

While you have this direct connection with VIA, please ask them about the looong-waited BIOS update for the Artigo A1000, so we can try and install WHS on that kit.

Check out http://www.homeserverhacks.com for an update on the Via Artigo A1000 bios – he has a step-by-step build on the A1000

Thank bob, but I guess that BIOS version is only for the select few…

Note: the BIOS image that I am using is a test image that I received from VIA and is not for public release. VIA has told me that after it has been thoroughly validated (i.e. tested some more), it will be released here. The current version is 1.03 which is NOT what you are looking for.

…guess I’m going to have to re-open my tech support case with VIA.

    Hi

I’m particularly interested if this system allows Wake On Lan and Sleep on Idle. I’m looking for a DIY smarter NAS that stays in the attic unnatended and starts when needed and shuts down (sleep/stand by) when not needed and does not cost over 500 EUR :-)

Power consumption (in stand-by, idle and full throttle without VGA) would be helpful in the review

    thanks!

    Hi

    It’s me again.
According to VIA specs, the system should support Wake on Lan and S3 suspend to RAM. But I’m puzzled as to whether it supports RAID or not … the VX800 chipset, according to Jetway supports RAID, but there is no indication on VIA page for that.

    thanks and regards,
    Misu

Well, it runs Ubuntu, so presumably linux software raid will work. It looks like a cool box, getting a low-power 24/7 generic linux box that can work as nas plus whatever else I want is very attractive. I just hope the board stands up to high use. And the price is a little bit high… hopefully it will come down in a month or two.
