A post on the twonky forum by the TMM Product Manager, Feb. 28, 2009, implied that HP will not let Twonky sell the addin to custom builders of WHS.

Huschke – For streaming from WHS to PS3 you should use this (http://ps3mediaserver.blogspot.com/)

Works with AVI, MKV, ISO etc. I’m running it on a HPWHS (2Gb only change) and it runs great.

Twonky never worked on my PS3. I had to rename the AVI files to VOB files in order to view them on my PS3. Fortunatley recent PS3 firmware updates made it possible to view divX and XVid AVI files on my PS3 using Windows Media Connect supplied by Windows Home Server out of the box. So personally I don’t see the advantage of using Twonky over WMC unless the newer version streams mkv without having to rely on mkv2vob (a tool, that remuxes any mkv file to vob).

Actually, with a few tricks the current add-in can be installed and used on a custom home server. But I guess this will be much better and easier to do.

I can imagine lots of people will be happy with this news!

I never used Twonky Media application how is it? Does it stream MKV or M2TS or is it more constrained in formats?

This is good news. I used Twonky several years ago on my NSLU2.
