CES 2009: TwonkyMedia™ Server Quickly Becoming the Industry Standard for Connected Home Media

TwonkyMedia Server won 2008′s Best Home Server Software Award from WGS Readers, and they’re here at CES showcasing their new TwonkyMedia Manager software to show attendees. As many of you know, TwonkyMedia Server is bundles with the HP MediaSmart Server and Fujitsu-Siemens SCALEO home server and upgrades Windows Home Server’s connectivity to full DLNA compliance, so it can work with a wider range of media devices.

With the next version of Windows Home Server (“Vail”) sitting on the Windows 7 platform in 2010, DLNA compliance won’t be so much of an issue as it will be delivered out of the box, but for now we’d say TwonkyMedia Server is a pretty essential purchase for home server owners wanting to stream and share media to a digital media receiver. Here’s what they’ve had to say at the show:

LAS VEGAS –(Business Wire)– Jan 08, 2009 PacketVideo (PV) announced today at CES that its TwonkyMedia server software has now been adopted by dozens of leading consumer electronics (CE) manufacturers – more than any other media server software application – to enable digital media sharing on compatible home and mobile devices.

TwonkyMedia server removes the barriers that have traditionally made designing and enabling media sharing among multiple connected devices throughout the home a painstaking process for manufacturers. The award-winning software supports more media files and syncs with a wider range of devices – including PCs, gaming consoles, and DLNA- and UPnP-compliant hardware – than any other media server software on the market. It also maintains a higher degree of resource efficiency, including lower code size, memory consumption and CPU usage, making it the ideal choice for routers, network-attached storage (NAS) devices and other home networking products.

By integrating TwonkyMedia server software into their products, CE manufacturers benefit from customizable interface, skin and navigation structure options, enabling a unique, out-of-the-box branded experience. User-friendly menu options and advanced content search and discovery capabilities ensure the product meets stringent consumer demands, while support for multiple languages, most major operating platforms and the widest range of music, video and photo file formats in the industry rounds out the most complete media server software product on the market.

PV revealed today at CES that TwonkyMedia server is now shipping standard or bundled on a variety of new and soon-to-be-launched CE devices from leading manufacturers, including:

Buffalo LinkStation Live™ LS-CHL, LinkStation Pro Duo™, LinkStation Mini™ and LinkStation™ Quad
Denon AVP-A1HDCI, AVR-5308CI, AVR-4308CI, AVR-3808CI, S-52, S-32
HP Media Vault and MediaSmart Server devices
Philips NP1100, NP2500, NP2900
PURE EVOKE Flow, AVANTI Flow
Ripfactory Ripserver
Siemens Gateway Gigaset SX764 WLAN dsl
TEAC WAP-8500 and WAP-4500 digital music adapters
Western Digital My Book® World Edition™ NAS products and WD Share Space products

“While the connected digital home has been an industry focal point for years, it’s finally coming to fruition and DLNA technology, specifically TwonkyMedia server, is helping make the vision a reality,” said Angela Scheller, Ph.D., vice president, DLNA Product Group, PacketVideo. “CE manufacturers see the clear value of accelerating convergence by incorporating powerful media server software on products consumers are already purchasing such as routers and NAS devices. PV is helping its partners break down compatibility barriers, making media stored on a standard network accessible throughout the home to drive and meet the next wave of consumer demand.”

TwonkyMedia server utilizes the three-box server/control point/renderer model outlined by DLNA guidelines, meaning the software can serve and store files, while also acting as a remote control dictating how media is played. Within the last year, the world’s leading CE brands, including HP, LaCie, Fujitsu Siemens, Cisco-Linksys and others, have adopted TwonkyMedia server to be deployed in their products.
