CES 2009 is Coming

I’m spending the weekend getting prepared to travel out to Las Vegas on Wednesday for the 2009 Consumer Electronics Show. This is where thousands of manufacturers show off the new products they have in the pipeline for the coming year.

In terms of the home server world, I’m not anticipating any major news other than HP showing off their new MediaSmart Server, but I’ve been wrong before, so key an eye on the site just in case.

I have a packed schedule of meetings with a variety of companies, including both the Windows Media Center and Home Server teams, Cisco, Sonos, Iomega, VIA, SanDisk and D-Link so I’m looking forward to bringing you news of what they have planned for 2009, as well as other interesting products I spot on the show floor.

If you’re an exhibitor at CES who has a product you think our readers would be interested in, then use the contact form to get in touch and we can catch up.

Experience from last year suggests that trying to find time for regular posting during the show is very difficult indeed, so updates may be a little erratic. I’m hoping a new netbook (Samsung NC10) will make life a little more easy publishing posts from around the show.

To keep up to date with what’s happening whilst I’m at CES, subscribe to We Got Served’s Twitter feed and I’ll be posting updates there from Wednesday through Saturday.

You don’t think they will announce PowerPack 2 just as they did with PP1 last year? I’d be disappointed if we didn’t learn more. Also, I think HP will be more forthcoming as to when existing EX470/475 customers will get an update that mirrors some (if not all) of the functionality included in the EX48x series. And hopefully we learn of some new WHS partners on the horizon.

    Other CES predictions include…
    - Of course Windows 7
    - IE8 CTP launched
    - Lots of news around regarding Windows Live, Office Live Apps and Live Mesh.
    - Some sort of XBox / Zune cross functionality
    - Some sort of Zune / Windows Mobile cross functionality. I think we’re going to see Microsoft make Zune available to mobile users by launching a microSD card that includes storage and software to run on mobile phone.

Speaking of Windows 7, Windows Home Server enthusiasts should pay particular attention to Home Groups, PlayTo, Media Player and Media Center to get clues as to what is likely to be integrated in v2 WHS.

Why oh why does school always happen to get in the way of big events…

If you are speaking to the HP guys, could be please ask if they will be bringing the Mediasmart Server to Australia?

  • Huschke

MattG, you can always import it or look for other highly capable WHS machines like the SCALEO Home Server.

Please convey to HP that they will have a lot of upset early adopters, who took the risk with WHS early on, if they do not provide the software upgrades. I do not mind paying a modest amount for the upgrade, though others may disagree.

Also I just upgraded my memory so there is no way I will buy a new server. I will just soldier on with what I have, which is fine for my needs. Though the updates woould be nice.

At Microsoft please find out when they will make Live Mesh available for WHS along with Skydrive integration. Also Webfolders for Skydrive is a must now that they offer 25gig of storage.

Thank you for hosting this great resource. Leslie, Mountain View, CA

I think we will hear news from the WHS team – but what I don’t know. Would be cool if there was news on PP2 & new partners….
