Full Details on the HP MediaSmart Server’s Mac Support

If you’ve been scratching your head today wondering exactly how the new HP MediaSmart Server supports Apple Macs, and how Mac support differs from support for Windows PCs, HP have today published a (rather glossy) whitepaper entitled, “Managing a Digital Lifestyle in a Mixed OS Environment”.

It’s a good read and provides a good overview of what’s available in the new Encore systems.

Sadly it still doesn’t answer the question of how they’re doing TM backups to a SMB volume. Given the restore limitations, I’m starting to worry that they’re enabling the usual SMB hacks for TM, which isn’t good for file integrity.

@ViRGE – Yeah, could be, but I doubt it. I could never get the SMB hacks to work right. It’d get some percentage of the way through an initial backup and essentially crash the mac. If this is all they are doing, then they’re in for some mighty nasty support calls. If I had to guess, they’ve implemented a custom iSCSI driver to make it look like an attached drive or perhaps even enabled AFP on the server and somehow gotten it to look like an AirDisk. We’ll see in February, I suppose.

Incidentally, I always find it funny that even the enthusiast sites sometimes repeat the “cannot run the administrative console from you mac” rhetoric when you can RDP into the console so easily (doing it right now from my MBP). Funny.

Is this update going to be available for owners of the first generation Windows Home Server? That would suck otherwise.
