Issue with Product ID Keys for Windows Home Server in October Action Pack

If you’ve been attempting to install Windows Home Server from your Microsoft Action Pack subscription, you’ve probably discovered that the Product ID Key doesn’t work.

Microsoft’s Eric Ligman, Global Partner Experience Lead has posted a solution on the SMB Community blog:

Attention Microsoft Action Pack subscribers…

We have identified an issue in the October Action Pack shipment regarding the included Windows Home Server software with the PID key not working properly with the software. To ensure you are able to use the included Windows Home Server software right away, you can receive an updated PID to use by contacting your country’s Regional Service Center directly. In addition, we will be including updated PID cards for the Windows Home Server software in the January Microsoft Action Pack kit as well.

We apologize for the inconvenience and wanted to get this information and the proper corrective actions out to you as soon as we identified them.

Thank you for helping get the word out on how to get the corrected PIDs for Windows Home Server for Action Pack subscribers.

Would it be SOoooo fracking hard to have sent an email to the MAP subscribers ? You know, the email address that your sites have made me type in about 500 times over the last year ?

I lot hours and hours and all my previous WHS backups trying to reinstall to get this damn thing to work with what turns out to be a bogus PID.

I mean REALLY, would it be SO hard to send an email ??!!
Maybe you need someone in the Exchange group to come over and show you all how that works ????!!!!!!!!!!!!

I’m with JJ. I called MS a week ago about this after a frustrating day attempting to install WHS and I STILL haven’t received a working PID from them. I did receive a call to find out if I was happy with the resolution to my case, though! Needless to say, that poor man got an earful. Then I received an email survey asking about the phone call, but still no valid install key!

The Action Pack is often riddled with errors, though, so this should be no surprise to any of us.

Thank God for this web site!

I’ve been planning all week to play around with WHS this Saturday (today). Inserted the install disk on fresh hardware, punched in my PID, waited 5 minutes and got this stupid error. Tried it two more times (like I would get a different result, duh)before doing a GOOGLE search and finding this great site. You saved me a couple of hours of reconfiguring my hardware and changing out parts only to go to bed late p’ed off.

I agree with JJ as well, I get 20 emails and three calls a week from the partner program. God forbid send an email with instructions to get a new PID. From what WhatTribe said it doesn’t look like I’ll be seeing a new PID until January anyway.

My experience with Microsoft home products:

OneCare (Beta, Ver 1, Ver 2) – I like it but it seems like every day one of my PCs is out of date so keeping my circle green has become a more of a job. Now I here its going to be discontinued next year.

Media Center (XP 2005 and Vista) – Bought an extender for the XP version which will not work with the Vista version. The promised (2007)support for DirecTV never materialized so I can really only record 4 channels of over the air HD. And, the new IP TV is just a bunch of commercials.

XBox 360 – Still vey cool but loud.

    WHS – ?, maybe I should pass

Anyway, thanks for listening to my rant, I feel better. I really should be playing with EBS anyway. Hope that PID works!
