Microsoft Drop Windows Home Server Price By 30%

Over the past few months, Microsoft have been working hard to raise the profile of Windows Home Server with the developer community, culminating in the product being released to MSDN (at last) in the coming weeks.

Now, in an attempt to drive sales from system builders, Microsoft are today announcing that the price of the Windows Home Server SKU will receive a permanent reduction by 30% – here’s the announcement we’ve just received.

Beginning tomorrow, November 1, Microsoft will introduce a 30% price reduction of the Windows Home Server software for the System Builder channel.

After a successful year on the market, Microsoft is reducing the price of the System Builder version of Windows Home Server to provide additional value to the system builder community and further promote the home server category.

During its first year in the market, Windows Home Server has been embraced by customers in over 50 countries. The list of hardware partners continues to grow and third-party software developers have released or have announced more than 60 Add-in programs extending Windows Home Server’s capabilities.

This is a pretty big announcement – reducing the price of the system builder SKU by a significant amount will hopefully encourage more companies to release Windows Home Server systems, enabling a reduced price point and greate sales volume. From an end-user perspective, it will hopefully mean that Windows Home Server is better placed to compete with Linux based NAS devices at the bottom end of the market.

It’s great to see Microsoft starting to get out there and competing to grow the home server market. You can hear more about the announcement over at the Windows Home Server Team Blog.

I wonder if this will lower price of the WHS DVD OEM version for those of us looking to build our own systems???

  • Huschke

Frankly I don’t think so. Why? Well, just a guess based on Microsoft history regarding oem versions so far -.-

MSDN availability? – when was that announced? – certainly great news!

Excellent. Newegg currently has it at $150, which is only slightly less than what I paid for it last year, so the price drop hasn’t taken effect yet it would seem. That would push the price down to a hair over $100, which is a good price indeed.

I received the Small Business Action pack last week and it included WHS and the unrelated 2008 versions SBS and ESB

Good news. I hope many more embrace WHS. For my part, it is the best single software investment I’ve made in a long time. Great value for the power and peace of mind. (I like the HP MediaSmart server, too.)

It will be interesting to see if system builders will pass on this saving to the consumer, or they’ll just keep it to bolster their profit margin.
