It is unfortunate that Tranquil won’t allow us to upgrade the memory without voiding the warranty.

I wrote them to inquire about buying the cheaper model (due to the added cost of shipping and the weak dollar), and upgrading the RAM and HDDs as I needed in the future. I was told it would void the warranty. Too bad, especially given the fact that HP now allows this in their boxes.

I suppose I’ll wait to see what HP has cooked up for Encore, and hope local resellers in the US will start to carry this at maybe a more attractive price for those of us stuck using dollars!

Great job on the breaking news WeGotServed…. you guys always seem first with news like this.

Although I’m a great fan of Tranquil’s philosophy of low noise/temperature/power usage, they do seem to be charging a lot for their upgrades.

The differences between the base units boil down to RAM and hard-drive. The standard version has 1Gb RAM & 500Gb drive, the advanced version ships with 2Gb RAM & 1Tb drive instead. The price difference should be less than £45, but Tranquil are asking for almost £120. That seems like an awful large price hike just to avoid invalidating the warranty.

As for their external 5 bay enclosure with eSata port-multiplier for @ £290, I’ve found a 4 bay equivalent for almost half that cost (http://www.storagedepot.co.uk/Enclosures-and-Cases/sc884/p890.aspx) which has a eSata port-multiplier as well as USB. Ok so it’s missing the 5th bay, but at what a cost.

I don’t begrudge Tranquil wanting to make money but when they are charging so much for something whose intrinsic value is quite low it bothers me. But that’s just me.

Sounds like a nice machine – shame they couldn’t have spent a bit more time/money on the printed graphics on the front of the unit – they look pretty amateurish and really spoil an otherwise effective, simple design.

While I appreciate that a home server is not necessarily going to be on display in the same way as more front facing devices, the cooling requirements usually mean that you can’t stick it totally out of sight in a cupboard – for example my house is small so my Tranquil T7-HSAi home server has to sit on the desk in front of me. Good industrial design is important!
