Further to our post over the weekend regarding the forthcoming release of My Movies for Windows Home Server, a pre-release version is now available for public testing.
What does My Movies do?
- Functions as a standard server for My Movies clients.
- Includes a fully automated “Disc Copier”.
- Includes automatic monitoring of movie folders added to or already located on a WHS share.
- Functions as a meta-data provider, without the need for a My Movies client for Microsoft DVD library, Niveus Movie Library, Open Media Library, Media Portal, and hopefully soon XBMC.
The add-in will be hugely useful for those home server owners with growing movie collections, and those wishing to use Windows Home Server as more of a media server.

Note that the Pre Release 2 version that Brian mentions is listed on the download page (http://www.mymovies.dk/downloads.aspx) is simply the client program. You’ll need the WHS Pre Release 4 server version (installed on your WHS server machine) AND the Pre Release 2 client only version (installed on your WHS client computer) in order to successfully use the program.
I hope that helps make a little more sense of it all for you guys.

Yep, they all do. When I run the client or server Collection Management, I see Pre-Release 2. Not 3 or 4 as in the posts on their forum.

Well, what a SlyFox (and it is indeed a pun). To copy DVD’s you have to create an account on their website, and either donate $50 or write *at least* 30 movie profiles. Oh, and you have to install AnyDVD which runs as a 30day trial or costs you 49 Euros, plus an additional 30 Euros if you want HD options. Not to mention, it doesn’t yet come with a HD Decoder, and has a small issue with reading DVDs which requires either buying or using the 30 day trial they have linked to even be able to read DVDs properly…..
So, in all likelyhood, this will cost most at least 85 Euros to just use…. Slap this under Commercial Add-In. It’s a great concept, but they are kinda deceptive about how they’ve marketed it.
Though if you only have DVD rips, its a great product, and may end up worth the money you will inevitable have to spend on it. And unfortunately, all my movies are in AVI or WMV and it doesn’t recognize them properly, it only gets the first valid movie in a folder. And I have a well organized videos folder with a lot of sub folders. Not for me.

I’ve been using My Movies for years now. It’s a great product (definitely worth a small donation to the author – not sure about $50 though). However, I only use it for DVDs and so I have no need to pay for all of the add-on stuff (like the $50 donation and the €80 SlySoft AnyDVD HD purchase in order to use the disc copier feature). I simply use the free version of DVDFab (i.e. DVDFab HD Decrypter – http://www.dvdfab.com/free.htm) to rip all of my DVDs to my hard drive. I then store all of the ripped DVDs over on my WHS machine and use the My Movies client software to organize the movies collection (grab cover art, movie descriptions, etc.), and display the collection inside of the Media Center interface (which also works with Media Center extenders as well).
The automatic disc copy stuff is really nice, but it’s just a bit too pricey (especially considering you’d also have to purchase a USB Blue-Ray drive for the WHS as well) and so you’re probably better off just doing it manually.

@The Office Maven – You are right on.
I use DVD43 with My Movies if I want the whole DVD, else I use DVD Shrink and only pull in the main title.
Please explain to me this when using My Movies 2; When copying DVD TV series, I can copy using the MCE plug-in. How is this done for series ? It seems that I am creating a DVD rip for each DVD and therefore have the same DVD cover for all the DVD’s in that collection. This doesn’t look right, when I select Watch, I get an option to select Disk, but when I select disk1 or disk 2 or so on, It can’t find the DVD. Looks like a file structure issue.

Where does this program pull its movie information from? I know other scrapers would use imdb.com to use for data.
There is a new site in development, actually a wiki. This has mainly been created for XBMC (glad it was mentioned in the article). There are 1080 and 720 background on this site for movies (fanart), and covers as well. Please add to the site if you can…

Adam: My Movies has it’s own user maintained WebService for meta-data.
This is why it is possible to uniquely identify discs, ect., as these sorts of informations would never be possible to locate using a screenscraper.
