Add-In: Router Control v1.0.0.7

Felix Kollmann is the author of Router Control, a brand new add-in for Windows Home Server which allows you to monitor the traffic going through your uPnP router.

The current feature list is small, but perfectly formed:

• Traffic graph support
• RouterControl online update check
• RouterControl schema upload
• Felix is promising to continue building the feature set for the add-in, including:

v1.0.1.0

• Show and modify UPNP port forwards
• Automatic (optional) forward of Home Server Homepage (if UPNP router unsupported by Home Server)
• Support for IP internet connection (not only PPP (read: Modem and DSL))
• Complete German translation

v1.0.2.0

• Download traffic statistics (CSV)
• Automatic (optional) error reporting
• Router down notification
• Notification on new port forwards

Is it possible to list which routers this works with and which it doesn’t. I have been reading comments by some folks that had a bad experience with the add-in. I haven’t read much from those who have been successfull. The Linksys Router I have is heart of my home network and I really would the add-in but at the same time I don’t want to crash the router. Takes too much time to set it back up.

My router is recognized (D-link Dir-655) but I don’t see uptime (unsupported) and I don’t see any graph moves, time is going by but I don’t see any traffic measurment.

I will wait till next release I guess.

An attempt to install this add-in on a Media Smart Server connected to a Linksys WRT54G router resulted in a blue screened connector just as had been previously reported on the MSS forum. It appears the add-in may have compatibility problems with the Media Smart. To the developerL Please look into this. Additionally it would be nice to know if the router must be a logger. Linksys WRT54G is not one.

I installed this on my MSS and I use a WRT54GS v2. It installed OK but after the first “frame” of activity has passed I see no data. I suspect that is because the graph only goes as high as 1200KB and my Internet connection is much faster than that. I noticed that the sample screen shot only goes as high as 500kb and the router is shown as Internet Connection Sharing. So far it has been no value to me.

“I installed this on my MSS and I use a WRT54GS v2. It installed OK” Did you have to restart the server after installing? I just got a blue screen on the connector and it wouldn’t respond. Also it is reading a log, Linksys doesn’t store one.

I don’t remember having to restart the server because if the add-in though I’m certain I’ve restarted the server since installing the add-in. IIRC, it seemed to work right away (after I turned UPnP on).

This add-in causes my WHS Console to crash to a blue screen (not BSOD) and forces my client to disconnect from the console. I can re-connect, but when I click on the add-in, it shows connecting to selected router and then the same behavior occurs. Upload router schema fails with an HRESULT error but disabling it and the traffic graph don’t change the crash symptom. Too bad. I was excited for this add-in. I’m using a Trendnet TEW-633GR.

It would be nice if we can have something like DUMETER build in MSS, to track the total INBOUND / OUTBOUND of the server (to see who is stealing the data from the MSS??)
