Windows SideShow Release Candidate is Ready for Download

I got an email from Microsoft Connect last Thursday.  I’ve been rather busy on other projects and failed to notice the subject.  “Announcing Media Center Gadgets for Windows SideShow Release Candidate!”  Just 2 short months ago, my first article for WGS was about a Media Center Gadget called Sideshow.  At the time, it had the potential to add some nice features to Media Center through the ability to access and control your computer from certain mobile devices.  But it needed a lot more work to make it useable.

Microsoft has finally added support for extenders and is preparing for the final release of this promising Media Center feature.

Read all about it over at the Windows SideShow Team Blog.  If you wish to try it out, you can sign up to download this software over at Microsoft Connect.

About Jim Clark

Hello. I’m from the heartland of the U.S. Lots of corn and beans, although Iowa is a lot more than just farmland. It also has a few computer enthusiasts (no, not me!). I’ve been around PCs since I got my 1st PC XT aloooong time ago. WGS is one of the first sites I found centered around WHS. And the best. Every once in awhile, I do get away from the KB and enjoy time with and my wife and our 4 kids. And I do have a day job.

This certainly sounds promising, hopefully it will be usable on something like a Windows Mobile based phone… Imagine controlling the songs/playlist in your back garden whilst hosting a bbq all done over your wireless network.

It certaily opens doors for more MCE/Windows looking wireless controls come light extenders.

My Dell XPS 420 has the sideshow compatible display on it, wonder if this would work on it?

Unfortunately, I do not have a compatible sideshow device. It’s a free download, so why not try it if you do have one?

Does anyone know if this will run as an app on just a regular PC or laptop? It would be nice to control my VMC PC from the deck with my laptop.
