HP MediaSmart Server Update – PVConnect Doesn’t Play Nicely With SlimServer

If you use the Logitech Squeezebox on your home network and, as a result, have SlimServer running on your HP MediaSmart Server, then installing the new HP Update will cause an issue – i.e. Your Squeezeboxes will stop working.

PVConnect, which is media serving software which installs with the new HP MediaSmart Server update, appears to use exactly the same port (9000) as SlimServer, and as a result, when you install the new update, your Squeezeboxes will not be able to play any music, and when you access SlimServer on WHS, you’ll be surprised to see a TwonkyMedia (PV Connect) settings page.

To resolve the issue, you’ll need to reset SlimServer to utilise a different port. Here’s how you do it:

1. Log on your the Home Server through Remote Desktop
2. Open server.prefs with Notepad ( C:\Documents and Setting\All Users\Application Data\SqueezeCenter\prefs\ server.prefs )
3. Change the line httpport: 9000 to httpport: 9001 and saved the document.
4. Change Control Panel > Windows Firewall – Exceptions: “SqueezeCenter 9000 tcp” from port 9000 to port 9001
5. Restart the Home Server – and voila, up and running.

Thanks to the SlimServer forums for the workaround, and yes, I have two Squeezeboxes – they’re completely brilliant.

Thanks for the tip! I updated yesterday but haven’t listened to my squeezeboxes since. This is a case of you identifying a problem on my home network before I am even aware of it and long before I start tearing my hair out over it! Thanks a million – this will be first order of business when I get home from work tonight. Cheers!

Pleasure – you owe me some hair, btw :)

I have seen this update this morning, but have not yet installed it. I currently have Twonkymedia running on my HP WHS. Is this the same thing? If so, is it recommended to uninstall the TwonkyMedia and then install PVconnect?

I think that twonkymedia’s full version (not the HP PVconnect) will allow you to change the port number in the configuration. Otherwise, you can do it in the config .ini file (I can’t remember the exact file name). There is a thread somewhere on their forum talking about how to run multiple twonky server instances over different ports, but I last checked on it almost a year ago.

I followed the above steps prior to upgrading. After the reboot the duet controller cannot find the music source. However I can remote to the sever and play music via Squeezecenter. The player plays the music correctly. Any ideas?
