HP Respond to MediaSmart Update Installation Issues

Earlier today we reported that HP had released their long-awaited update for the HP MediaSmart Server. However, many users experienced issues attempting to install it. Just had this comment through from HP:

As you may have seen, the HP MediaSmart Server software update was live for a few hours yesterday. This update provides customers with enhanced media streaming via Packet Video, server-side anti-virus from McAfee, prepares MediaSmart Servers for 64-bit support (requires the upcoming PowerPack 1 release from Microsoft) and contains a few other minor updates. The customer response in terms of downloading the update was exceptional.

Unfortunately, we started seeing install process inconsistencies in certain customer environments that had not arisen in our testing.

As a result, we have temporarily removed availability of the update in order to quickly assess and fix these issues. We expect to have a new installer in a short period of time and the upgrade should be back up and available in the very near future. Thanks to everyone for their continued patience – we know there is high customer interest in this update.

We will continue to update this site when new information is available.

    Spent 3hrs last night restoring my server from the restore disks, thanks to HP/Microsoft the shine is going fast on windows home server, looks more and more like a product fit for the bin, very dissapointed!.

    Not sure I agree with Jim above. I’ve been running very smoothly for a month now and other than a few glitches along the way, its sitting very peacefully in my basement doing exactly what its supposed to do. Regarding the goofed installer put out by HP its annoying but does not tarnish my opinion of either HP or WHS. Mistakes will happen along the way…this is a fact of life

    I installed this yesterday and now cannot connect to my WHS from any of the three PCs networked to it…Coincidence? Anyone know how I can either uninstall this or connect to my server to see what’s going on? Remote access doesn’t work either.

    Have you restarted your WHS? Power it down then back up.

    Michael, you can try to remote desktop connect to your server. On a PC go Start/All Programs/Accessories/Remote Desktop Connection and follow the instructions.

    RDC allows you to bypass the WHS Console and log directly onto Windows Server. From there maybe you can find what’s wrong.

    I logged onto one of my systems Wednesday to discover that the Windows Home Server icon in the system tray was red (I had never had this before). I open thed the console where the system indicated that it had a software upgrade to install. I installed the upgrade and then the server required a reboot. I have a 7 Windows systems (5 XP and 2 Vista) on the network as well as one Mac Mini. After the update all systems are running fine.

    I think I managed to down load this update the other quite by accident as I didn’t know it was coming out.
    It seemed to install OK without any of the issue mentioned above, but I haven’t noticed any of the enhancement mentioned, how can I tell if it has been installed OK.

    I’m pleased that I opted to build my own WHS server instead of buying an HP WHS solution. I’ve been running WHS v1.0 24/7 on a home-built PC for about three months on a 7-PC Vista/XP network without a reboot or a serious problem. Better still, my WHS nightly backups have repeatedly saved me from what turned out to be a bad-DRAM system corruption issue on my work PC. Heck, I’m not sure if I really *want* to install the coming Power Pack 1 upgrade! :)

    Before HP shutdown the update, it was automatically installed by my server. Then within a few hours, my health indicator turned red with a series of messages that my CPU was running hot, my fan speeds where too low and my voltage was off.

    From looking at the hardware status, it didn’t seem to be that abnormal, but I don’t remember what it was before the update. None of the functionality that was supposed to be in the update appears.

    I also noticed on the media smart tab it now says the last updates were applied in 1967! The server still appears to function correctly despite these issues.

    Has anyone else seen these problems?

    Did HP provide an update on this issue. Does somebody know when the “April update” will be distributed again ?

    Along with the update, I installed McAfee and PV Connect based on the fact that it was promoted by HP, the manufacturer of my Windows Home Server. The entire system bogged down, and although the server seems to be working (backups ran as usual in the background last night, and I can access the user folders), I cannot connect to the server via the Console. When I pull up the Console, all I get is a blue rectangle, and no matter how long I wait, it will not go beyond that. After multiple attempts, I was able to get to the point where I could un-install (I think!) the PV connect software, but then I have not been able to get back into the server via the console. I want to get rid of the McAfee software as well, but can’t seem to get back in through the console. Very dissappointed with HP. I have avoided any add ons, with the fear that it would damage the server, and to be in this position with software “approved” by HP, is very disturbing. Will need to call them up and see if there is any resolution. Up till now, I was very happy with WHS, and HP’s implementation of the hardware.

    I am having the same problem right now with my HP MediaSmart server. I didn’t read too much about it before I got it and when it ran it’s updates last night now the red light is on for critical and I cannot get into the server through the WHS Console or RDP. HP support is useless at best and I am out of other options except people who have already suffered through this.
