Routers That Successfully Auto-Configure with Windows Home Server

Over on the WGS Forums, we’re compiling a master list of Routers that auto-configure with Windows Home Server using uPnP.

You’ll probably know that Windows Home Server is meant to be able to configure remote access for your router if it supports uPnP, but in fact, this only seems to work with some routers. If you’re having problems with your existing router, make sure you’re running the latest firmware for the router, as this can work miracles.

So, if Windows Home Server auto-configured your router, then please visit the forums and let us know your router’s name and model number. If you have a firmware/hardware revision to hand, then that’s useful too. If you see a router listed that you do not believe auto-configures, it may be that you’re runner a different version of the router’s firmware. Please check the forum to see who submitted the router and contact them via the Personal Messaging system to check which firmware they’re using. Then let me know so I can update the list.

    Agreed with Rich on this one.

    I can however also vouch for the DLink DIR-655 Router… love mine far more reliable than my old belkin one and its fast. Remote works no problems.

    Another thumbs up for the D-Link DIR-655. Zero problems with WHS auto-config. BEST ROUTER EVER!

    Neither my D-Link DIR-655 or DI-524 auto configs with WHS, regardless of the firmware version. I have to set up ports manually.

    It’d be useful to get the firmware or hardware revisions listed too. I see the Linksys WRT54G in the list above and there have been so many drastically different revisions of that over the last few years and many many unstable firmware revisions. Getting people to look on the base of their respective routers and list the hardware revision will really help your chart.

    I have the Actiontec MI424-WR and it does not auto-configure. I got the Actiontec with my FIOS install and had all the default settings in place. I tried to autoconfigure and it thought about it for a while and then indicated it couldn’t configure the router.

    Hi all,

    Will respond to comments above in one post!

    Rich – a list of those routers that don’t would be a *long* list and may be a bit unwieldly to manage. If we get the list of those that *do* right, bascially we can get into a “if it’s not on the list, don’t trust it” kind of scenario.

    Mitch – that’s strange. My advice is to visit the forum and contact the person who posted that it worked for them to compare your experiences. Maybe you can work something out.

    Michael – great suggestion. Some people are including their firmware/hardware revisions over on the forum, so it’s worth checking out. I’ll edit the post with a request for firmware too, but again, my advice is to use the latest.

    Linksys WAG354G does NOT get auto-configured, even though it supports uPnP.

    Workaround is to set up port-forwarding manually – search the WHS forums on microsoft.com for instructions.

    You might want to put an asterisk on the Linksys WRT54G because there are different versions of this router and they don’t all work the same.

    I struggled with the WRT54G (V2) for a week and couldn’t get it to work correctly (got http working but could never get https to work). Finally updated the firmware to SVEASOFT firmware and got it working.

    SMC Model: SMC2804WBRP-G

    Does not work with WHS but work around described by microsoft for port forwarding will work, btw that model work without a problem for Azeurus and during the test from WHS it pass the UPnP but will not work without port forwarding in NAT outside that it is very reliable both wireless if set up WPA/WEP at same time.

    To be honest I even have a new belkin but still in his bag :) because after port forwarding it work so not replacing yet the old one.

    I have the LINKSYS WRVS4400N (Firmware Version: V1.1.03)
    Wireless-N Gigabit Security Router with VPN
    The router supports UPnP but its buggy – that is after a clean reboot UPnP works for a say 1 day – after that I fails – had to manually configure the router (if one doesn’t restart)
    Set static IP lease for WHS and Port forward to that static IP Ports 80, 443, 4125
