How To: Install Orb on Windows Home Server

If, like me, you have a long weekend coming up thanks to the Easter holiday, you may be looking for a project to work on with your home server. May I suggest working through the following How To developed by WGS forum member GaMeR, which walks you through installing Orb on your Windows Home Server system.

Orb allows you to stream your digital media to any internet connected PDA, mobile phone or laptop, and you can now achieve this dorectly from your home server. Big thanks to GaMeR for the walkthrough and to Drashna for the continued development and support of the We Got Served Wiki – if you’re looking for additional projects, this should be your first port of call.

Over to GaMeR:

Requirements

  • Orb 2.0. You can download Orb 2.0 in two flavors: With or without a TV program guide. I choose to download without TV program guide (I guess most users won’t be using it anyway).
  • ffdshow or K-Lite Codec Pack

Installing

Install ffdshow or K-lite codec pack. This should be pretty straightforward. Just keep the default settings if you’re not sure.

Install Orb 2.0. After installing you get the “Welcome to Orb” wizard. Press Next twice, and fill in your account information. Press Next again, and again. A system check will occur, after that press Next again.

Now, we see the option to configure Orb to stream your media. Yes is already selected, so we press Next. Select the network type you got. Mine is Mixed, so I chooce Both (Some devices on wireless, some on wired) and click on Next. By now we’ve finished the wizard, so we’ll click on close….

Just curious – has anyone installed orb and used it on WHS? I’m just wondering how it compares to WebGuide.

  • Andrew Carr

Konrad Walsh for started this topic on the forums and has written a walkthrough for installing Orb. He doses suggest installing the TV guide as it’s a pain to add in later involving a complete reinstallation of Orb

I have been using Orb from 2004 with WindowsXP MediaCenter2004.
Orb is the best location and device free solution I think.
So i suggested Microsoft MediaCenter Beta Test Team to implement the function likes Orb, but it didn’t come true.
Now we can use free third-party software WebGuide ,but it cann’t transcode any stored multimedia files to FlashVideo.
I continue to require to implement more functionable software on WHS2.0 or Next version of MCE.

    Hi

I’ve searched everywhere and have some basic questions:

would like to install ORB and will be following the following installation tutorial

    http://wegotserved.co.uk/wiki/index.php … n_Your_WHS

however I have a few questions:

From the installing section of the tutorial

    Quote:
Install Orb 2.0. After installing you get the “Welcome to Orb” wizard. Press Next twice, and fill in your account information. Press Next again, and again. A system check will occur, after that press Next again.

    1. The ORB site takes you to a download section http://www.orb.com/en/download_orb. But does the file Orb20SetupEnGB.exe contain the software that works with Microsoft Windows Home Server software? I only see what file download link and nothing on the page that indicates its suitability to MSS.

2.Once downloaded the correct software do i install it onto the Server or onto a pc desktop?

    Quote:
Install ffdshow or K-lite codec pack. This should be pretty straightforward. Just keep the default settings if you’re not sure.

    3. Again, where do insall the files referenced above and also is it a matter of just running the .exe files.

    4. The file I can download is called klcodec417s.exe this relates to a ‘Standard’ version. is that correct or should I have chosen the ‘basic’ version?

    5. can you confirm if this is the right version ffdshow-20020617.exe or should I have chosen an earlier version?

I’d appreaciate any help you can offer

    Micky
