Microsoft to Support WHS vNext in the Second Half of 2008?

Activewin are running an article suggesting that someone over at Microsoft may have let slip the support schedule for 2008, which apparently includes plans to support “Windows Home Server vNext” in the second half of 2008.

At this point, to my knowledge, Microsoft haven’t released any official guidance on release dates or features for Windows Home Server v2/vNext and what I do know is that they’re all focused on getting the data corruption bug fixed and Power Pack 1 out of the door in the first half of this year.

Other than that, who knows, but it’s a great story icon smile Microsoft to Support WHS vNext in the Second Half of 2008?

Many thanks to Richard Gregg for the tip.

Fix the data corruption bug “in the first half of the year”!!! I find it incredible that it wasn’t prioritized highly enough to be resolved in the first hours of the year. This is a major flaw in the OS that they should be throwing extra resources at to get it fixed ASAP.

I’m sure they’re working pretty hard to solve the corruption issue. We’ll see a fix when it’s ready and fully tested.

It’s good to see how much they are supporting the users with releasing not only the power pack, but the update they released last year. I’m sure vNext will be great. Of course it means I only have 12 months or so to move from my current WHS to a 64bit capable one. Will I need to buy another copy of WHS on can I migrate my existing OEM copy to new hardware? Time will tell.

Martin – I agree with you that this is a serious, reputation-damaging bug, but just throwing resources at a problem is no guarantee of solving it more quickly. It’s the old ’9 women can’t have a baby in one month’ thing. The bug has proven itself difficult to repro (or it would have shown up in the beta period) so it will be difficult to fix.

For myself, I’m confident that they are working as hard as possible on the bug. They don’t need this kind of bad publicity on a new platform.

To be honest I don’t think this is any indication of the release schedule for the new windows home server. All it says to me is that the support and infrastructure will be in place for the development of WHS V Next /2 (what ever the name) ready for its road to release.

With Windows Server 2008 only just being released I can’t see them moving straight on to a consumer product base with out letting the new server OS shall we say Maturing in the enterprise/business market first. My be I am wrong, hell part of me hopes so as it will be interesting to follow but I can’t see myself upgrading any time soon no matter when it is released……Ok Ok may be if it has some new killer feature or the We Got Served review persuades me ;)

    Just my thoughts.

Neil Hutson’s post can be found at , but it does not list, or no longer lists, WHS vNext.

FWIW, the correct interpretation of Neil’s post, and WHS vNext’s inclusion in it, would be that the WHS vNext in 2H’08 would be based on Windows Server 2008, instead of the current Windows Server 2003.
