Now this is pretty cool.
We’ve been tracking the development of Diskeeper for Windows Home Server over the past few months, since it was announced at CES in January.
For those of you who are new WHS, Diskeeper automatically keeps all of the hard disks (both internal and external) on your home server defragmented to optimise the speed and performance of the server. Unlike the standard Disk Defragmenter application included in Windows Home Server (and other Windows SKUs), Diskeeper runs as a service in WHS, and continually works on defragmenting your disks whilst the server is idle. Access the server, Diskeeper stops. Server idle? Diskeeper gets back to work so there’s no noticable performance hit whilst it’s running. They call it Invisitaksing.
I posted a preview of the software back in July.
The great news is that we’ve been able to secure an exclusive, fully-working 45 day demo of Diskeeper 2007 for Windows Home Server - Diskeeper have pulled this together especially for We Got Served, (and have extended their usual 30 day time-limit for us) so you can download, install and check it out straight away.
Diskeeper 2007 Home Server has never been released to the public, and it won’t be released anywhere else. Diskeeper are in the process of developing Diskeeper 2008, and it is this edition that will be released to the public towards the end of the year. As mentioned, it’s only you lot who will have access to this edition whilst we wait for the 2008 release.
The DK 2008 release will have full integration into the WHS Console, as well as a few new features which are being kept under wraps (although look out for a preview and a new demo in the next few weeks). Until then, you’ve now got access to the only WHS de-fragmentation software available
Have fun with it and give us your comments.
Many thanks to Derek at Diskeeper for supporting us with the demo.

Do we have any clue on the cost of this yet? and will include liences for clients or just the server?

Sweet, gonna try it out

Nope, no details as yet…. my guess would be that this will be a license for the server. Diskeeper have a separate product for clients, and I doubt whether they’d cannibalise their sales – but what do I know?

Running it as we speak.

I am one of those older people that this MS Home Server was supposed to be so easy for, or so they said at the beginning. I really need this program above and have managed to downlaod, all I need now is instructions on how to install this gem.

Well done to both parties – a good initiative. And nice to see the competion that WHS has kicked off. I’ve used PerfectDisk for several years now and have just heard from Susie Colon-Solis at that Raxco also have plans for a WHS defrag – no date yet, however.
