Avast to Release Windows Home Server Anti-Virus Product

Whilst a number of companies have announced software support for Windows Home Server, only F-Secure have formally announced that they will be developing a bespoke anti-virus product for Windows Home Server.

However, a post back in April on Avast’s support forums uncovered a planned release of an Avast anti-virus product for WHS. A member of Avast’s support team also confirmed this week that a WHS anti-virus solution was in the pipeline, and whilst it looks like this product won’t be free like Avast’s home client solution, it will be a lot more reasonably priced that the $399/£249 Server edition of Avast Anti-Virus. Here was their support response:

“Thanks for contacting us.

I can confirm that we do indeed intend to support a product that is more appropriately priced for this specialist usage than our Server Edition product or SBS Server Edition offerings.

I can’t discuss, in any meaningful way, pricing at this point; but I would expect the offering to be priced at or around the same price as Professional Edition (or to be more accurate between $39.96 and $50) – that decision will be taken nearer the launch of the product. It is, however, not our intention to offer a free version of our product for this offering.”

Thanks to Pete Iber for the digging!
